YVP Course Selection Guide

Where to Start and Next Steps – How to Chose the Beginner’s Program that is right for you

Level 1-A – YVP ALL SKILLS

Course Description:  This course is designed to teach [or refine] basic fundamental volleyball skills [passing, setting, attacking and serving] for youth players in grades 2-9 [boys and girls].  Using multiple courts, players are grouped according to age and/or skill level.  Skill mastery is accomplished through skill progressions, coach feedback, volleyball drills and ‘lead-up’ [introductory] volleyball games.  This course will not include full 6 vs. 6 scrimmages.

Player Description: 

  • Boys and Girls [grades 2-9].
  • Beginner-level youth players who desire instruction on basic/individual volleyball skills [passing, setting, attacking and serving].
  • Youth players wishing to gain confidence in their individual skills by repeating the course.
  • Youth players that prefer instruction vs. competition.

Availability:  Scheduled in 6-week sessions during the Fall, Winter and Spring following the ‘traditional’ school-year calendar [September-May/June] and also during the Summer Camp season in alternate formats [see ‘YVP All Skills Camp’ and ‘YVP Mini Course’].

Level 1-B – YVP PLAY THE GAME

Course Description:  A series of modified ‘lead-up’ volleyball games that isolate or focus on a specific skill suitable for beginners in grades 2-9 [examples include serving games, attacking games, setting games and passing games].  These games include a variety of formats [1 vs. 1, 2 vs. 2, 4 vs. 4, etc.] but do not include full 6 vs. 6 scrimmages using regulation volleyball rules or scoring.  These games might include net height and court size adaptations to encourage player success. 

Player Description:

  • Boys and Girls [grades 2-9].
  • Beginner-level youth players seeking additional opportunities to refine basic volleyball skills through a series of modified ‘lead-up’ volleyball games that isolate or focus on a specific skill [examples include serving games, attacking games, setting games and passing games].
  • Beginner level youth players that prefer [modified] competition vs. instruction. 

Availability:  Scheduled in 6-week sessions during the Fall, Winter and Spring following the ‘traditional’ school-year calendar [September-May/June] and also during the Summer Camp season in alternate formats.

Level 1-BB – BOYS PLAY THE GAME

Course Description: Same as above but for BOYS ONLY! [Grades 5-8]

Level 1-C – YVP CLINICS [ATTACKING, BALL CONTROL BASICS, LEARN-2-SERVE]

Course Description:  A series of clinics that isolate or focus on a specific skill [serving, attacking or passing] and are suitable for beginners in grades 2-9.  These clinics might include net height and court size adaptations to encourage player success. 

Player Description:

  • Boys and Girls [grades 2-9].
  • Beginner-level youth players seeking additional opportunities to refine basic volleyball skills by selecting a clinic that isolates or focuses on a specific skill [serving, attacking, passing].
  • Beginner level youth players that prefer instruction vs. competition. 

Availability:  Scheduled year-round.

Level 2 – YVP TEAM

YVP Team is a team based learning opportunity for children in grades 5-8. YVP Team meets once per week, for six weeks.  Prior volleyball training [i.e. YVP All Skills] or playing experience required. Exceptions to specified grade level by request only, 919-544-9400.  Players with further experience grades 5-9 may look into the Triangle Junior League.

Course Description:  A course designed to give Beginner-level youth players [grades 5-9] their first team-based camp experience with embedded skill development. This course will focus on basic team tactics [offense & defense] and may include modified play [a gradual progression from throwing/catching toward pass/set/hit volleyball].  Serving modifications may be made to encourage player success and scoring modifications will be applied as appropriate.  This course focuses on 6 vs. 6 concepts [vs. full scrimmages] with modified rules or scoring.  YVP is not a traditional league, rather preparation for league or team play. 

Player Description:
• Boys and Girls [grades 5-9].
• Beginner-level youth players seeking to learn to play volleyball through a slower progression that benefits less-experienced players or those lacking any playing experience.
• Preparatory training for children who plan to try out for a team or need to prepare for competition [vs. instruction].
• For players who share a goal to gradually learn to play ‘pass/set/hit’ volleyball but may need modifications to slow the game down to encourage team and player success.

Availability:  Scheduled in 6-week sessions ONLY during the Fall, Winter and Spring following the ‘traditional’ school-year calendar [September-May/June].

Level 3 – TRIANGLE JUNIOR LEAGUE

Course Description:  League format team-based play with some embedded skill development.  Scoring/serving/competition modifications are made as needed by group or level with a goal to teach the game as close to ‘game speed’ as possible regardless of current skill level.  As skill level and understanding improves, modifications will be changed.

Player Description:

  • Advanced/Intermediate level youth in grades 6-12 [girls and boys].
  • For youth players who have been exposed to skill based instruction and are ready for a team experience.
  • For youth players desiring to improve in preparation for MS, HS or Club tryouts or teams.
  • For youth players desiring a local alternative to compete in a league format.

Availability:  Scheduled in 6-week sessions ONLY during the Fall, Winter and Spring following the ‘traditional’ school-year calendar [September-May/June].
